Pink Out Day!
To show our support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, AWMS dedicated November 13th to PINK OUT DAY! Students were to wear pink that day, and donate a dollar. We raised $470, and will be donating the money to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
AWMS Raves Over Red Ribbon Week By Taylor O. & Madison R.
Red Ribbon Week hits AWMS, once again this October. We asked several Anthony Wayne students what they thought Red Ribbon Week was specifically dedicated to. Most of them gave us blank responses. Basically, Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October, in the United States. To show our support for this cause, our school dressed up and donated, all last week from October 22nd through October 26th. Students went all out this week, showing great support for this campaign. What our school did was dedicate each day of the school week to something different, and gave each day a catchy phrase.
Overall, Red Ribbon Week was a great experience for all of us. We hope you all enjoyed Red Ribbon Week as much as we did. Each year, it is very interesting to see others’ interpretations of each day, and see what creative things they may have tweaked to make each day their own. It was truly an exceptional week! Now all that is left is to count the days until the fun will begin again next year...
- o Monday- “We’re RED-y to turn down drugs”. For Monday, students were required to wear something red. Walking through the hallways that Monday, all you saw was red! It was almost as if you were swimming through a vibrant red sea. All students that were able to wear red did. However, some most likely forgot over the weekend, which is completely normal. We are middle school students, after all.
- o Tuesday- “Let’s TEAM up against drugs”. Tuesday started with a real BANG! Students were told to wear their favorite sports team jersey to school. And, almost every student did! We really showed our support on that day. Students presented many varieties of jerseys that day. Some wore their favorite football, basketball, hockey, or baseball jerseys. However, for students that were not exactly “into” sports showed their support with any sports related shirt they could get their hands on... Now that shows some die-hard supporters.
- o Wednesday- “Drugs are WACK”. Wednesday approached about suddenly, in the middle of the school week. It was Wacky Wednesday! Students were supposed to wear wacky clothing and wacky hair. And many fearless students strutted in their backwards, mismatched clothes, and rocked out awesome hairdos. Students that participated in this day of Red Ribbon Week really went all out for Wednesday. Who ever knew such a ordinary day could be so extravagant and entertaining?!
- o Thursday- “I CAN be drug free”. On Thursday, students were told to bring in at least one item of canned, non-perishable food. Also during this week, AWMS was having a food drive. So the cans from the food drive, and cans from Thursday would be donated to our local food bank. Additionally, students that donated three or more cans were given the opportunity to wear a crazy hat to school on Friday. We did a terrific job on Thursday... We donated a lot of food and we completed another day of Red Ribbon Week showing our maximum support.
- o Friday- “Drugs are a NIGHTMARE”. Sadly, this week of crazy fun had to end on Friday. Lucky for us, the week ended with a great theme- Pajama Day! Students were able to wear their pajamas to school. Almost everyone dresses up for Pajama day because it is the only day out of the year we get to dress comfy and cozy. Who wouldn’t want to participate? Also pajamas come in hundreds of varieties, which makes it a lot of fun to see others’ pajamas. They come in all colors, patterns, and textures. They are so much more interesting than plain ol’ jeans. Also, to show support for those who have died because of drug and alcohol abuse, some students painted their face white and wore a shirt that said "Every 15 Minutes" on it to represent that someone dies from drug and alcohol abuse every fifteen minutes. Obviously, this day was a HUGE success. It was truly an outstanding way to end the week!
