8th Grade D.C. Trip
Day One: Anxiousness, apprehension, excitement-Dead Tired. The 8th grade of AWMS woke up in the morning, not necessarily "feeling like P-diddy". Though they were, as they say in Spanish muy cansada, the thrill of the trip eventually overweighed how sleepy they were.
After a gruesome and panicky morning, trying to get to the school a solid three hours ahead our normal schedule, the 8th grade class departed from Anthony Wayne Middle School on our so called “adventure” towards our Nation’s Capital. After an exhausting 6 hour trek across New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, our destination laid out the welcome out. Our first stop on our three day escapades was the Marine Corps Memorial Iwo Jima Statue, a large figurine depicting six soldiers raising an American Flag. The memorial is dedicated to all personnel of the Marine Corps who have died in for the U.S.A. since 1775. After we finished viewing the memorial, we made our way to Arlington National Cemetery. We had a tour guide explain why different sections had different head stones for the graves, and who all the individual statues were dedicated to and their accomplishments in the military. When we exited Arlington, we made our way to the Lincoln and the Vietnam Veterans Memorials. We had the opportunity to view the reflecting pool in between the Lincoln and Washington Memorials, the Statue of Honest Abe himself, and the Vietnam Wall. After an eventful day exploring D.C., we traveled to our hotel where we had a Pizza Dance Party. But, oh no, this was no ordinary Pizza Dance Party; this was a Pizza DJ Dance Party! After a fun filled night, we all rested for…
Day Two: After resting, we headed down for a quick breakfast, and off we went to once again explore D.C. We then made our way to The Capitol Building to take our class photo, keep an eye out for the runner. We then visited the front of the White House. After the White House, we had a quick lunch break, and then went to the Smithsonian National Museums of Natural and American History. Both were rather interesting, and had plenty to view and talk about. After this we had a Twilight Dinner Dance Cruise, and being on a boat was not as awesome as The Lonely Island cracked it up to be. But after an interesting lunch, we rapped up the evening by visiting the Franklin D Roosevelt & Thomas Jefferson Memorials, as well as the National World War II Memorial. We then were returned to our hotel rooms to pack and rest for the final day of our trip.
Day Three: After our final breakfast at the hotel, we proceeded to the Baltimore National Aquarium, a large building with many things to see. It had a rain forest in it, with real plants and animals, it definitely was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen while learning. While the rest of the building was essentially a massive fish tank, with (as one would guess) hundreds of fish and other aquatic animals. We even had the chance to see a Dolphin Show or a 4-D movie, both of which were really cool. After a very fun and fascinating journey through the Aquarium, we had lunch and drove home.
And so, after a very hot but fun three days, we returned home. As whole the trip was very enjoyable, and is definitely something to look forward to if you’re in 6th or 7th grade.
