The Little Mermaid: Auditions, Callbacks, and Casting by Madison R.
For most kids at school, it's just an average day at AWMS, but for a certain group, it's their favorite time of the year. No, it's (probably) not their birthday, it's the time for the AWMS School Musical! And I say, "Tis the season," because I am ecstatic!
For pretty much everyone, the auditions were very nerve wracking and full of tears or nervous nail biting. That constant waiting to go in to audition can really cause a bad case of butterflies in your stomach. Even worse is that nervous feeling you can get waiting to hear who got a callback. For me, I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest! You don't know if you're going to make it or break it.
Callbacks can be good or bad; you never know what to expect. You could go for one part and end up singing or acting for someone completely different! Yet, Friday was the absolute worst. I was scared, nervous, happy, and relieved all at the same time! I was scared I wouldn’t get the part, but relieved that all the waiting was finally over! A constant stomach ache was gnawing at me for hours until 2:45 when I bolted out the door and sprinted to the cast list. You would have thought a stampede was running through because all you could hear was the sound of feet running down to the cafetorium and loud squeals.
While down there, many people were hugging, jumping up and down, or hyperventilating, but others were running out the door, a complete crying mess. For those who didn’t get the part they wanted, I’m sure you’re going to end up loving it like I did! But for now, keep your head up high and keep trying, because practice makes perfect! Never give up on doing what you love. I’m sure next year and the years to come; you’re going to kill it at that audition!
Also, to some of the nervous sixth and seventh graders who plan on auditioning next year: it’s not as scary as it seems. I was terrified last year, but I wasn’t as scared this year. Have fun with it and don’t be afraid to go all out! The AWMS Musical is always incredible and will be just as amazing this year!
